Pinson Road to Rose Hill Cycle Scheme

Scheme Overview

The proposed cycle route will comprise of a segregated cycleway and shared walking and cycling path between Pinson Road and the Rose Hill / Bilston Lane junction. The scheme connects to the forthcoming Noose Lane to Pinson Road Cycle scheme, providing an onward dedicated cycle link between Wolverhampton and Walsall.

The route supports the regeneration of Willenhall  and improved  access for the new Willenhall Railway Station.

Your feedback

Prior to the scheme being constructed we want to hear your views on the scheme and identify any potential issues with the design. A short survey is provided at the bottom of this page.

Scheme Description

The scheme has been designed in line with national guidance to make cycling more direct, safe, comfortable, and attractive for both new and experienced cyclists. You can view detailed plans of the scheme further down the page.

In summary the scheme proposes the delivery of 1.2km of walking and cycling improvements starting at Somerford Place, continuing along New Road,  Bilston Street and Rose Hill and before terminating at the Bilston Lane/Rose Hill junction. The scheme will consist of :

  • c.680m of segregated cycle way (surfaced with tarmac and to be separated from the footway and carriageway with a kerb each side);

  • c.520m of shared foot/cycleway (where segregated cycle way is not possible and surface with tarmac);

  • 8 new road crossings (with dropped kerbs and tactile paving).

Scheme Objectives

The scheme aims to:

  • Provide a high-quality cycling infrastructure connection between Pinson Road and Bilston Lane junction.

  • Deliver high-quality cycling infrastructure access to the proposed Willenhall Railway Station

  • Improve active travel infrastructure for access to Willenhall Town Centre.

Why Here, Why Now?

With the construction of the new Willenhall Station, now is the right time to increase accessibility to harness the benefits for the town centre and Willenhall residents.

Local and national government are encouraging travel by foot or bike as much as possible because there are so many different benefits to take advantage of. Walking or cycling to school, work or the local shops instead of driving can have a huge impact. For example, by reducing congested roads, improving air quality, health, mood and the environment.

In Walsall, the health and wellbeing of adults and children could be improved and getting more people cycling can help achieve this.  Currently, levels of cycling in the West Midlands are low, only 10% cycle at least once a week. The goal is for cycling to make up 5% of all trips people make in the West Midlands. We believe that with the right infrastructure, we can make cycling and walking for short trips an easy option in Willenhall.

•	Between 1994 and 2014 the percentage of 17 – 20 year olds with a drivers license fell by 19%. •	10% of residents in the West Midlands cycle at least once a week. •	One third of Black Country residents do less than 30 minutes of exercise a week. •	Black County local authorities are in the bottom five local authorities in the country for walking and cycling. •	77% of inactive Black Country residents increased activity levels during lockdown. •	66% of residents in the Black Country reported that quieter roads in lockdown encouraged them to be more active. •	Cycling in the West Midlands saves 23,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. •	Half of parents in the Black Country are concerned about the safety of children cycling to school. •	Fitness benefits of cycling prevent 661 long term health conditions each year in the West Midlands, saving the NHS £4.3 million. • 68% of inactive residents in the Black Country are female. •	6% of people from ethnic minority groups in the West Midlands cycle at least once a week. •	70% of inactive residents in the Black Country are in the lowest socio-economic bands.
